Candidate for Alex Salmond's Alba Party scheduled to appear at legal tribunal after election

A candidate for Alex Salmond’s Alba Party is to appear before the Scottish Solicitors’ Discipline Tribunal (SSDT) next month.

A “virtual preliminary hearing” in a case involving Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh will take place on May 11 - days after the election.

Ahmed Sheikh, a former SNP MP who also once stood for the Tories, was recently unveiled as a candidate for Salmond’s new pro-independence party.

She is the top candidate on the Central Scotland List and is hoping to become an MSP next month.

Details of the case - Law Society v Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh - have appeared on the SSDT website.

In 2019, Ahmed-Sheikh was fined £3,000 after being found guilty of professional misconduct by the SSDT.

The tribunal case centred on her handling of a trust fund at a law firm where she was previously a partner.

The SSDT accepted that the actions of her and another solicitor had been "genuine but erroneous", and it was agreed there was no suggestion of dishonesty or personal benefit.

An ALBA Spokesperson said: "There is no comment allowed on a Law Society Tribunal hearing which is scheduled but has not taken place. These are historic matters dating back 10 years to the former Hamilton Burns legal firm which Tasmina left in 2015 when she was elected to Parliament. ALBA has full confidence in Tasmina."
