Cancer patient 'robbed, assaulted' while recovering in hospital

Police arrested the 45-year-old hospital worker from a home in Sydney.

A hospital employee has been charged with robbing and assaulting an elderly cancer patient in Sydney's north-west.

Police alleged Percy McCarthy, 45, entered the 77-year-old patient's room while she was recovering from routine surgery at a private hospital in Bella Vista earlier this month.

It is alleged Ms McCarthy removed two credit cards from the patient's wallet and then physically restrained her while demanding the PIN codes for her credit cards.

The patient suffered deep tissue bruising to her arms, leg, neck and chest.

Police said the patient gave the codes to Ms McCarthy who then withdrew money from the patient's bank account at a nearby shopping centre.

Officers arrested the employee at a home in Bungarribee on Tuesday morning and charged her with aggravated robbery, knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime and dishonestly obtaining financial advantage.

She appeared at Blacktown Local Court and was granted bail on the condition that she not enter any hospital or provide medical treatment to anyone.

She will appear in court again in Parramatta in May.
