'Cancelled Christmas' sparks concern among This Morning stars amid new lockdown rules

Phillip Schofield expressed his fears over Christmas being cancelled this year as Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a whole raft of new coronavirus restrictions.

This Morning was extended by almost half an hour for the prime minister's address, which saw him tighten rules in the wake of increasing Covid-19 infections.

Among the new measures include implementing working from home if possible, a decrease down to 15 people allowed to attend a wedding and a 10pm curfew for pubs, bars and restaurants.

At the end of the speech, Johnson confirmed that the new measures would be in place for six months.

Discussing the speech afterwards, Phil pointed out: "The killer blow is delivered right at the end, that everything we've heard here is for the next six months."

Joined by Holly and Nick Ferrari, he added: "We all looked at each other and went, 'there goes Christmas'."

"There goes Christmas unless of course it's that drastic warning," Nick said. "Just as we saw from those advisors yesterday that we will try and get the number down.

"Does he want to be the prime minister who cancelled Christmas? You're right, currently this takes us all the way through March and the rule of six applies."

Meanwhile, commentator Julia Hartley-Brewer added: "It's going to be a long, hard winter. Welcome to your new normal.

"I have no doubt this is going to change a week before Christmas."

*This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV
