A Canberran is among two people killed in a fiery crash that damaged a South Australian highway so badly that part of the road will be closed for up to a week.
The 23-year-old ACT man was driving a Ford utility that collided with a B-double truck on the Stuart Highway at Wirraminna, in northern South Australia, about 12.15pm on Saturday.
South Australia Police said both vehicles caught fire after the impact.
The Canberran died at the scene, as did a 57-year-old Adelaide woman who had been a passenger in the truck.
The truck driver, a 49-year-old Adelaide man, was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.
A photograph published by police on Sunday morning showed that sections of charred highway had crumbled and collapsed as a result of the horror smash.
"The highway remains closed to all traffic in both directions as the road surface has been damaged by the crash and fire," police said.
Major Crash Investigation officers have flown to the scene to look into the incident.
