UNIVERSITY of Newcastle's newest deputy vice-chancellor will join the Hunter institution straight from the office of federal minister for education Dan Tehan.
Professor Kent Anderson will head to the Hunter on June 7 to take up his post as deputy vice-chancellor global in Newcastle's senior executive team.
Professor Anderson, who has previously served as a vice-chancellor at both University of Western Australia and University of Adelaide, has also had stints at the Australian National University and Hokkaido University.
A former Newcastle interim deputy vice-chancellor (academic), he departed in 2019 to serve as Mr Tehan's senior advisor on higher education.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky described the new recruit as "a demonstrated leader with experience across academia, government and corporate sectors in Australia and abroad is joining our senior executive team."
"Our university has a focus on partnerships and engagement in the Looking Ahead Strategic Plan and I'm confident that Professor Anderson's experience and expertise will boost our efforts in this field - in our local regions across the Hunter and Central Coast as well as in the Asia Pacific and beyond," Professor Zelinsky said.
"Kent's understanding of the complexities of global education will, of course, bring valuable expertise to our international agenda."
Professor Tony Travaglione had served as interim deputy vice-chancellor (global engagement and partnerships) after Professor Kevin Hall left in 2020 for Canada to join the University of Victoria, British Columbia.
"I'm pleased Tony will continue to serve our institution as the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, UON Singapore," Professor Zelinsky said.
