Canberra shopping centres to be upgraded

Designs for upgrades to shops at Kaleen, Campbell and Duffy have been released, part of improvement plans for eleven shopping centres across Canberra.

A construction tender has already been released for upgrades at Kaleen, with further contracts for Duffy and Campbell to go to market in the next weeks.

Construction will start on all three centres in early 2022.

"These upgrades will support jobs and business, and encourage Canberrans to shop locally by improving public spaces and building vibrant local hubs," Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said.

Feedback highlighted landscaping and tree planting as priorities, as well as accessibility, safety and spaces for gathering.

"This feedback has been reflected in the designs we're putting forward for these works," said Minister Steel.

Kaleen's Gwydir Square will incorporate improvements including new toilets, more carparks, better landscaping, seating and a shade structure at the playground.

Duffy will receive new toilets and improved landscaping,a new playground and bike track, connected with new paths, while Campbell will improve paths, car parking and landscaping.

"Additional shopping centres slated for upgrades include Narrabundah, Evatt, Macquarie, Monash, Calwell, as well as the group centres at Weston, Kippax and Lanyon," Minister Steele said.
