Canberra set for cloudy New Year's Eve

There will be little sunshine in Canberra on the last day of 2020, and 2021 isn't looking any brighter.

Cloud cover and a chance of showers are forecast for much of the coming week.

The territory is set for a cloudy New Year's Eve with a forecast top of 26 degrees. There is a slight chance of some showers, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, but this isn't likely to dampen celebrations on Thursday night.

BOM duty forecaster Melody Sturm said there was an increased chance of showers in the late morning and afternoon but this would ease by the evening.

In other news:

New Year's Day will also be cloudy with a maximum expected temperature of 22 degrees. There is also a slight chance of showers.

Canberra could be in store for some showers over the weekend but it is unlikely to be consistent rain.

"I wouldn't expect it to be rainy all the time just showers passing, you would have to be unlucky to get the brunt of it," Ms Sturm said.

Saturday is set for a maximum of 23 degrees and Sunday could reach 28 degrees.

Cloudy days are forecast for the next week and Ms Sturm said that meant showers were possible every day.
