Rural crime is in the spotlight after ACT Policing announced they'll have a renewed focus on livestock theft.
ACT Policing along with law enforcement agencies across Australia have showed their support for Operation Stock Check, an initiative aimed at preventing livestock theft by making it difficult to transport stolen animals.
Officer in Charge of Rural Patrol Detective Acting Inspector Simon Coady said police would check the origin of any live stock moved by vehicle in the ACT.
"While many view the ACT as a smaller urbanised region, we still need to keep our guard up and police will be engaging with farmers to ensure they are doing everything they can to keep their stock safe," he said.
"Stock theft is not only stressful for the animals, it can also be financially devastating for farmers and families who rely on their stock for their livelihood."
People who have stock on their property have been reminded by ACT Policing to keep good records and to ensure their animals are easily identifiable.
Gates and loading ramps on properties should be securely locked to avoid theft.
People are encouraged to report any suspicious activity relating to stock theft to police.
