Canberra's worst roads for crashes revealed

Fyshwick is home to two of Canberra's most crash prone roads, new data has found.

Canberra Avenue at Fyshwick came in as the worst spot for car crashes in Canberra, followed by Monaro Highway at Hume and Newcastle street in Fyshwick, according to insurer AAMI.

The AAMI Crash Index collated 350,000 accident insurance claims nationally from AAMI, Suncorp Insurance, GIO, Apia and Bingle in the 2019-2020 financial year.

The data found 67 per cent of crashes on Canberra Avenue were "nose to tail collisions".

AAMI said Monday was the most common day for crashes to occur, with 1.30pm to 4.30pm the most likely hours.

Canberra Avenue at Fyshwick was in second place last year, trumped by the Monaro Highway.

Drakeford Drive in Kambah took out the fourth spot followed by Haydon Drive, Bruce and the Federal Highway at Watson.

The Barton Highway came in at number seven, followed by Canberra Avenue, Griffith and the final two positions were a tie between Hinder St and Mugga Lane.

The report found incidents decreased across the country in April during the COVID-19 lockdown but gradually returned since May and are now at pre-pandemic levels.

Paul Sofronoff from AAMI said Canberra Avenue held the top spot for three years before it returned to number one in 2020.

"The top two locations have been battling it out for the number one spot for some time, as Canberra Avenue at Fyshwick previously held the dishonourable crown as Canberra's worst crash hotspot for three years from 2015 to 2017 with Hume's Monaro Highway at number two, before swapping rankings for 2018 and 2019," he said.

Mr Sofronoff said peak hour traffic on Canberra Avenue was the cause of several incidents.

"When the roads are busy and congested - like Canberra Avenue so often is - it is crucial that drivers pay attention and follow the road rules," he said.

"Particularly when we see heavy traffic, combined with frequent stopping and peak hour frustrations, it's a real recipe for disaster."
