A new Gungahlin primary school will be named after surgeon and explorer Charles Throsby.
After a public vote, the name Throsby School was chosen for the new school which is being built in the suburb of the same name.
Charles Throsby explored the country around Lake Bathurst, Lake George, and the Murrumbidgee River in 1820.
He followed the Molonglo and Queanbeyan Rivers, starting from Lake George to arrive in the present day Australian Capital Territory in 1821. The suburb of Throsby was named after him in 1992.
The ACT Education Directorate also asked for the public to vote on one of four design concepts for the new school's logo and uniform.
The Eucalyptus leaf design was chosen to reflect the natural habitat of the region.
The $43 million preschool to year 6 school is set to open next year to keep up with rapid enrolment growth in Canberra's north.
The inaugural principal, Annamaria Zuffo, has had online meetings with the families of the 122 students who have enrolled to start next year.
Ms Zuffo has been the principal of Lyneham Primary School for nine years and has been working in the ACT public school system for 27 years. Her vision for the school leans on the four pillars of inclusion, curiosity, learning community and connection.
She said the contemporary building lent itself to explicit teaching of year groups and also larger group activities.
"The children will be in their own year group cohort but obviously with the means of engaging for different activities, connecting through relationships with the other children in their community," she said.
The enrolments are skewed towards the younger grades, with three kindergarten classes planned for 2022. The school will cater for 132 preschool students and 450 kindergarten to year 6 students.
Education Minister Yvette Berry said the new school would also be a community hub with a community room and kitchenette, multipurpose double gym, sports courts and change rooms, outdoor turf sports field and hardcourts.
"I look forward to the first day of the 2022 school year, welcoming new students to all our schools across the ACT, and particularly the first students at Throsby School, ACT's 90th public school," Ms Berry said.
