Canberra remains free from active COVID-19 cases

Canberra has remained free of any active cases of coronavirus, after no new patients were diagnosed with the virus in the past day.

Another 300-plus people were tested for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, as testing for the virus expands in Canberra.

More than 8800 people have been tested for coronavirus at either the Weston Creek walk-in centre or the drive-thru clinic at EPIC.

Testing had been expanded for the past week to anybody with coronavirus symptoms, regardless if they have had close contact with another confirmed case or linked to overseas travel.

The ACT on Thursday became the first jurisdiction in Australia to record zero active cases, after its last two patients recovered.

Of the 106 cases that have been recorded, 103 have recovered and three have died from the virus.

Despite the milestone, ACT chief health officer Dr Kerryn Coleman warned it would only take one case to restart transmission.

"We should be proud of what we have achieved through physical distancing and by making huge changes to our daily lives," Dr Coleman said.

"However, it is important that we protect the good work we have done. Please continue to follow ACT Health directives and practice good hygiene as we continue to fight this virus together."

Health officials have urged for anyone with symptoms to get tested, as authorities try and determine if there are any undetected cases in the ACT.

"Testing as many people as possible is vitally important for us to maintain our strong position and it will help us in providing the most accurate representation of COVID-19 in the ACT," Dr Coleman said.
