Most ACT COVID cases stem from interstate

The ACT has 13 new cases of COVID-19, but the number of people in hospital remains at three. (AAP)

The majority of new COVID-19 infections in the ACT have been linked to outbreak hotspots including Sydney and Newcastle.

The national capital recorded 13 new infections on Monday.

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said a large number of cases stemmed from people who tested positive after arriving in Canberra from interstate.

There have been 40 infections linked to the Omicron variant since the new strain emerged.

"The majority of our cases were interstate acquired, rather than being locally acquired, so we still weren't seeing a high level of local community transmission," she told ABC radio.

Vaccination bookings for children aged between five and 11 have opened ahead of the rollout starting from January 10.

An estimated 46,000 children will be eligible.

Demand for testing has boomed because of interstate travel requirements.

More than 4000 tests were conducted in the 24 hours to 9am on Monday.

Three people with the virus are in hospital, but none are in intensive care.

Vaccination levels have climbed slightly to 98.4 per cent of residents aged 12 and older.
