Canberra players issued DUI breach notices

The NRL has issued Canberra Raiders players Corey Horsburgh and Corey Harawira-Naera with breach notices after the pair returned positive tests for drink-driving on Christmas Day.

Horsburgh pleaded guilty to the charge of drink-driving in the Canberra Magistrates Court on February 23.

He has been suspended for one match and fined $5000, with the fine suspended for 12 months. He must also undertake and complete an education program as directed by the NRL.

Teammate Harawira-Naera also returned a positive test for drink-driving the same day, and has indicated he will plead guilty to the allegations when he appears in the Canberra Magistrates Court on March 25.

It is expected the breach notice will see Harawira-Neara fined $10,000, suspended for two matches and also complete an education program through the NRL.

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has already said both players were dropped from round one prior to the breach notices, due to their behaviour.

The NRL's sanctions take a number of factors into account including the players' prior offences and blood alcohol range.

Harawira-Naera was stood down at the beginning of the 2020 season while at the Bulldogs, over alleged misconduct involving high-school girls during their preseason.

The decision was overturned at the independent NRL Appeals Committee midway through the season and the 25-year-old was released from the club.
