Canberra parents renting apartments to dodge catchment zones

ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry acknowledged she had heard the rumours.

In order to get their children into their public school of choice, some Canberra parents are reportedly renting units in priority suburbs or using the same postal address as other parents.

ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry acknowledged she had heard the rumours on ABC Radio Canberra this morning.

She said some parents would go to extreme lengths to get their child into their preferred school.

Ms Berry said while the Government was not able to confirm the rumours, she had heard of multiple families using the same postal address in order to "trick" schools into thinking students came from that catchment area.

But she said these things were difficult to police.

"I've heard the same kinds of things," Ms Berry said.

"That people are setting up special, closed Facebook pages and organising homes where people use that as an address for multiple families."

"We certainly need to bring it to the attention of schools to make sure they take that into account."

Ms Berry urged people to report such practices to their school.

"We need to look at what are parents expecting from their education for their children and for their families and how do we meet their needs within their local neighbourhood schools," she said.

Barton apartments allegedly used to get into Telopea Park

A parent from Telopea Park School, Paul Haesler, recently went public with concerns that parents were renting units in the Barton school's catchment area to secure their child a place.

"The school has no way of knowing how widespread it is but anecdotally we are aware of it happening," Mr Haesler said.

"It's hard to see what schools can do about it, as it's a symptom of problems within the ACT education system."

Some Canberra schools are experiencing increasing capacity pressures.
