Canberra mum takes home $10 million in second big ACT lotto win

A Canberra woman will soon be more than $10 million richer after winning an entire lotto prize on her own this week, in the second big recent lottery win in the ACT.

The recent retiree held the only winning entry from a Tuesday night OzLotto draw, meaning $10,487,834 is now on its way to her.

In a happy coincidence, the woman's win became the second recent lotto win for the territory, after a Canberra man also found out he'd won more than $1 million this week.

Lottery officials reported the ACT woman told them she had been kept up all night waiting for confirmation of the win, after checking her numbers online earlier int he evening.

While wishing to remain anonymous, the woman did say she had been wanting to purchase a new home.

"My husband and I both recently retired, so the timing is perfect," she said.

"We want to buy a new home. And we really want to help our children - that's the main thing at the moment. It's really, really satisfying to be able to do that.

"And hopefully we can go overseas and travel to Canada one day soon."

In the earlier win, the Canberra man shared his prize with four other people.

Lotto officials said the man had received confirmation on Wednesday he would receive $1,172,770, from the winning ticket purchased at newsXpress Kippax Fair.

Staff at the newsagent had informed the man they were looking for a winner when he visited the store to cash in some scratchies earlier this week.

He checked the numbers when he returned home and realised he was a winner.

"I got them to print off the winning numbers and I went home and checked my ticket," he reportedly told the staff.

"It's unbelievable. I cannot believe that it's me."

The man said the win had come as a huge shock, and he was still thinking about how he would use the money.

"It will make life a lot easier and it's going to be great to be able to help the kids," the man said.

NewsXpress Kippax Fair manager Douglas Wilson said it was the first division one winning entry the outlet had sold.

Mr Wilson congratulated the man and said everyone at the store was very excited.

"We hope they really enjoy their prize," Mr Wilson said.
