Canberra mother walks free after being found guilty of kidnapping her son

The Canberra mother who kidnapped her six-year-old son from his school in August last year has walked free, after a suspended sentence was handed down in the ACT Magistrates Court.

Tessa Woodcock, 36, sparked a week-long search when she and her son went missing, sparking the ACT's first amber alert.

The pair were found more than a week later living in bushland with just blankets and a small fire for warmth.

Her son was then reunited with his father.

Woodcock initially pleaded not guilty to two charges, including kidnapping, but in December changed her plea to guilty.

She also pleaded guilty to breaching a family violence order.

She was granted bail early this year.

Today she was sentenced to six months' jail, but the remainder of the sentence was suspended, pending a 12-month good behaviour order.
