Canberra man previously charged with possession of child abuse material now also facing rape charges

A Canberra man in his early 20s charged with possessing child abuse material has had five additional charges laid against him, including two rape charges and two acts of indecency.

Angus Gottaas-Hughes, from Ainslie, was first arrested by police in December last year after the ACT Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team searched his home.

At the time, police said they raided the home after a tip-off from an overseas law enforcement agency, and alleged they had found numerous devices containing child abuse material.

Mr Gottaas-Hughes appeared in court today where the five additional charges against him were laid.

His lawyers indicated no pleas would be entered for any of the charges at this stage.

Mr Gottaas-Hughes had previously been granted bail following a mental health assessment, and his bail is now set to continue until his next court appearance.

As a part of his bail conditions he is banned from the Canberra suburb of Ngunnawal, the internet and approaching schools or childcare centres.

He will be back in court in early May.
