Police are investigating how a Canberra man was hit and killed by a car at the intersection of a highway in Queanbeyan last night.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Hill Lane and Kings Highway at 8:00pm after reports a pedestrian had been struck by a car.

Officers at the scene were told a man was walking in the middle of the road in the dark and was hit from behind.

The 38-year-old Canberra man was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

His identity has not yet been revealed.

The driver of the car, a 25-year-old Bungendore man, was not injured and was taken to hospital for routine testing.

No charges have been laid over the incident.

Officers from Monaro Police District established a crime scene overnight as they investigated what led to the man's death.

By the morning, the scene had been cleared and there were no ongoing road closures.
