A Canberra man was more than four times the legal limit when he crashed his vehicle in a Wanniassa car park, police say.
They said they were called to Wanniassa Oval about 8.20pm Thursday after reports of a crash involving a ute and a parked vehicle.
"The driver of the ute was attempting to reverse out of the car park when he [crashed into] another vehicle and was subsequently stopped by members of the public who contacted police," they said.
They took a 52-year-old Monash man into custody and he recorded a blood alcohol concentration reading of 0.224, four and a half times the legal limit.
Detective Inspector Road Policing Marcus Boorman said drivers needed to plan ahead and organise a safe ride home if they were going to consume alcohol.
"You don't even have to be on the road to see the immediate consequences of drink driving," Detective Inspector Boorman said.
"Fortunately in this instance no one was injured but it is not hard to imagine the horrific consequences if this collision had happened on the road at full speed.
"Our message could not be clearer - if you are going to consume alcohol just don't take the risk, don't drive."
The man's license was suspended and he was scheduled to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court.
