Canberra man accused of 'terrible' stabbing faces court charged with murder

A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder following a stabbing in Charnwood.

A 26-year-old man has faced court charged with murder, after allegedly stabbing a man to death at a home in Canberra's north over the weekend.

Jayscen Anthony Newby did not apply for bail in the ACT Magistrates Court today, after handing himself in to City Police Station at 4:30pm on Saturday, several hours after the violent attack in the suburb of Charnwood.

Police and paramedics were called to a townhouse complex on Cartwright Street at 1:30am on Saturday.

A 27-year-old victim was found with "extensive" stab wounds and taken to hospital, but died a short time later.

The victim's name has been suppressed by the court, but police have said Mr Newby knew the victim.

Detective Acting Superintendent Matt Craft said on Saturday that one other individual had witnessed the incident, who was assisting police with their inquiries.

"They were a witness to the matter, obviously a very traumatic time for them, and also for the families of all that are involved," he said.

"Certainly it's a terrible, tragic incident for them so we'll be doing everything we can to wrap as much support around them as we can."

The case has been adjourned until March 10.
