Canberra man accused of running down ACT police officers will fight attempted murder charges

Three police officers were hit by a car during a routine traffic stop on July 11.  (ABC News: Andrew Kennedy)

A man accused of hitting three police officers with his car near the National Arboretum in Canberra last month is set to fight attempted murder charges levelled against him.

On July 11, Thomas Matthews, 30, was arrested by one of the injured officers as members of the public worked to free another from under the car.

The officers were conducting a routine stop with another driver when Mr Matthews allegedly hit them.

Mr Matthews was charged with three counts of attempted murder, and three counts of driving at a police officer as well as culpable driving causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr Matthews has been in custody since the incident.

Today he appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court via a telephone link to Canberra's jail.

His lawyer has indicated he will plead not guilty to most of the charges but has not indicated a plea to the culpable driving count.

Police told the court two of the officers were thrown onto the bonnet of the car, before landing on the ground.

A third officer was run over, becoming trapped under the vehicle.

Two of the officers were fresh out of training college, being supervised by a third.

Matthews will be back in court in October.
