Canberra friends share $2.2m lottery win

Two Canberra friends have walked away with $2.2 million between them, as the only division one winners for Tuesday night's Oz Lotto draw.

The two friends and former work colleagues had been buying lottery tickets together for the past 20 years.

The pair were told about their win on Wednesday morning and said they were overwhelmed with the news.

"It wasn't even my turn this week, I mistakenly bought the ticket thinking it was my week," one of them said, according to lottery officials.

"I'm so glad that I did. We've waited so long for a win like this.

"I cannot wait to tell her, she will fall over. We used to work together and we've been buying lottery tickets together for about 20 years."

The winning ticket was purchased at the Waramanga Newsagency.

One of the friends said the pair previously saved up their small winnings from lotteries each year for Christmas lunches and a shopping spree.

"This Christmas is going to be a little different," she reportedly said.

"The rest though, I have no idea. You dream of this day happening and now it has.

"I really have no idea how I will enjoy my prize. We will both use it to really enjoy our retirement and I am sure we will be sharing it with our families."
