Evergreen Matildas striker Michelle Heyman has led Canberra United to a 3-0 victory over Perth for their first win of the A-League Women season.

Elsewhere, Newcastle are the unlikely league leaders after stalwart Lauren Allan delivered a 1-0 win over battling Western Sydney in her 100th game.

At McKellar Park, 37-year-old Heyman, who is keen to cement her Matildas spot ahead of March's Asian Cup, only needed three minutes to give Canberra the lead.

Tegan Bertolissio released Josie Aulicino with a terrific long ball and she slipped through Heyman, who toepoked home from close range.

Five minutes later, Canberra doubled their lead.

Bethany Gordon floated in a free kick and Emma Robers rose highest to beat Perth goalkeeper Alyssa Dall'Oste with a looping header.

Canberra (14 shots to 10) were on top all game and all but finished things off in the 57th minute.

Heyman, who now has two goals and two assists for the season, worked the ball to Gordon who let rip from range to seal the deal.

Canberra (1-1-2) sit sixth while Perth (1-0-3) are ninth.

Earlier, at the No.2 Sportsground, Jets skipper Cass Davis teed up milestone woman Allan, floating a ball in for her to head home the winner in the 26th minute.

The Wanderers' protests that Allan had been offside proved in vain.

The Jets continued to pepper Western Sydney's goal without reward.

Wanderers goalkeeper Shamiran Khamis was called into action and made top saves to deny Newcastle striker Melina Ayres in the 85th and 90th minutes to keep her side in the game.

But the visitors were unable to manufacture an equaliser.

Newcastle (2-1-0), under new coach Stephen Hoyle, go outright top of the table on seven points, while the Wanderers (1-0-3) sit 10th.

On Sunday, winless last-placed Wellington (0-2-0) host second-placed Melbourne Victory (2-0-1), while Sydney FC (1-2-0) play Central Coast (1-0-2) ahead of the international break.
