Canary Islands travel: Coronavirus test result will be needed for Scots arriving on holiday

Scottish travellers to the Canary Islands will soon have to provide confirmation of a negative Covid-19 test on arrival to the Spanish archipelago for their holidays.

It comes amid a surge in demand among holidaymakers to book trips to the islands in recent days after they were made exempt from Scotland's travel quarantine list on Sunday.

The new rules, which will be put in place 'in a matter of days', mean that no holidaymaker arriving on the islands will be allowed to enter a hotel, apartment or holiday home if they do not show the results of the negative test - which they themselves will have to pay for prior to their trip.

The test will also be required to be carried out between 48 and 72 hours prior to departure to the islands - which have seen 30 new cases and one death occur due to Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

According to Spanish news site Canarias 7, the new decree is set to be approved later this week, with the Canary Islands Government preserving a 'right of information' period - allowing for up to 15 days for the new regulation to come into force to allow news of it to reach the tourism sector in Europe.

The news comes as Boots look set to introduce a new coronavirus testing service it says can return results from swab tests in just 12 minutes.

The pharmacy chain said the LumiraDx devices, which are able to quickly process swab tests to give customers same-day results, will be rolled out in selected stores over the next few weeks.
