Canary Islands back on the quarantine list as Brits told to self-isolate upon return

The Canary Islands have been removed from the safe travel corridors list, the Transport Secretary has announced.

People will now need to quarantine if they return to the UK from the popular holiday destination after 4am on Saturday.

The decision is a major blow to the UK travel industry, as many firms recorded a surge in bookings for the Canary Islands when they were added to the travel corridors list in October.

Minister Grant Shapps said their removal was due to a rise in weekly cases and positive tests of the virus.

In a tweet earlier today, the Transport Secretary said that positive tests are increasing in the Canary Islands. He said: "Data indicates weekly cases and positive tests are increasing in the CANARY ISLANDS and so we are REMOVING them from the #TravelCorridor list to reduce the risk of importing COVID-19.

"From 4am Sat 12 Dec, if you arrive from these islands you WILL need to self-isolate."

Travellers to mainland Spain already have to isolate on their return to the UK.

Mr Shapps also tweeted that Botswana and Saudi Arabia have been added to the travel corridors list.

Meanwhile, the Government has said that holidaymakers returning from countries not on the exemption list can cut their quarantine short by paying to take a test.

The rule, which allows people to take a test five days after isolating, comes in for arrivals from December 15, and if the test returns negative, then they will no longer need to self-isolate for the remaining 14 days.
