Canal searched by emergency services over fears for someone in the water

Emergency services have launched a search of a canal over fears for someone spotted in the water.

Paramedics , fire crews and police were all called to South Road Pier in Ellesmere Port at around 8pm on Tuesday to reports that a person had been swimming in the water.

A search of the Manchester Ship Canal has been launched and boats are reportedly looking on a stretch of the canal close to the National Waterways Museum.

Police officers have cordoned off a section of the path that runs alongside the canal while the search is carried out and a police helicopter has been spotted hovering over the scene.

A witness at the scene told Cheshire Live : "Someone saw a person swimming in the canal and yelled at them to get out as it's dangerous.

"Unfortunately, the person disappeared from view so the emergency services were called out.

"The helicopter is overhead and there are several boats out on the water."

Cheshire Constabulary have been contacted for comment and will provide any updates in regards to this incident if and when we get them
