A Canadian woman received a shock in the mail when an Amazon order she thought was going to be a cat dish turned out to be pepper spray and a stun gun.

Jacynthe Cardin told CTV News she was unclear what to do when the weapons, which are prohibited in Canada, arrived at her home.

To rid herself of the illicit property she took it to a police station where it will be destroyed.

Amazon attributed the mix-up to a barcode scanning error, the BBC reports.

"This was an unfortunate incident and we are taking this matter very seriously to ensure it doesn't happen again,” Amazon said in a statement.

The retailer is rushing to get a cat dish to her for her pet named George Michael.

Ms Cardin said she did was unclear what to do when the package arrived, which was sitting on her doorstep and she feared anyone could have taken.

Amazon stated a warehouse employee in the US could have put an incorrect label on the box and added: "We will continue to work directly with the customer to resolve this incident."
