Canadian publisher cuts jobs

Sun Media Corporation, Canada's largest publisher of newspapers, is making 600 staff redundant, about 10% of its total. It will mean the loss of 16 journalists from the company's largest title, the Toronto Sun, as well as staff from other departments.

Jobs will be lost at every one of the company's 43 other titles. Pierre-Karl Peladeau, president and ceo of Sun Media's ultimate owner, Quebecor, cited the growing availability of free media, the economic slowdown, rising costs and falling advertising revenues as factors. (Via The Star)
