Canadian PM Addresses Oval Office Grimace While Trump Discussed Annexation: 'Glad You Couldn't Tell What Was Going Through My Mind'

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed on Tuesday U.S. President Donald Trump's statements about his desire to annex the country during an Oval Office meeting between the two.

In a press conference following the visit, Carney was asked about his facial expression while Trump addressed the matter, considering he appeared to be somewhat uncomfortable at the time.

"I'm glad you couldn't tell what was going through my mind," Carney said. "The president has made known his wish about that issue for some time. I've been careful always to distinguish between wish and reality. I was clear there in the oval office. On behalf of Canadians, this is never going to happen. Some things are never for sale. He agreed with that," Carney added.

Trump appeared to concede there won't be an annexation, telling press that even though absorbing Canada would be a "wonderful marriage" that would provide Canadians with tax cuts and military protection, "it takes two to tango." "We're not going to be discussing that unless someone wants to discuss it," Trump added.

Carney told Trump at the Oval Office that, "as you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale." "We're sitting in one now... Having met with the owners of Canada during that last several months. It's not for sale. It won't be for sale ever"

Carney added that there are opportunities for a good partnership between both goverments and that he's looking forward to what they can build together. "I think we established a good basis for future trade talks," Carney said at the press conference.

The two world leaders met to address escalating trade tensions, sparked by the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on nearly all Canadian imports last month, excluding energy products and potash, which have a 10% tariff.
