Watch as Canadian kids show off their ice hockey skills on frozen Cork field

This is the moment a pair of kids play ice hockey on a patch of ice in a Co Cork field last weekend.

As winter kept it's grip on Ireland, the Leduc girls, who recently arrived to Cork from Canada with their dad Caleb and mum Mallorie, were delighted to see ice form over a flooded field by Murphy's Farm in Bishopstown, Cork Beo reports.

12-year-old Maeve and her sisters Audrey, 9, Meredith, 8, and little Adeline, 6, spotted the ice covered field while out walking with their dad on Saturday.

Caleb said the family have been living in the area since September and the girls have been missing their backyard ice hockey rink at their previous home in Ontario, so when they saw the ice, they knew they had to take advantage.

He said: "They did bring their sticks and skates with them to Ireland because we had heard there was this thing Cork On Ice so they were hoping to do that, obviously that has not been possible this year,

"So when we saw the ice, we tried it out and they went straight home for their skates. We had a couple of hours on the ice and they loved it, it was a little reminder of home for them. Although we don't normally skate at home looking at a Pitch and Putt course!"

He said locals were surprised to see the Leduc girls shooting around on the ice.

He said: "People were really interested to see it and they were taking photos and videos, it was great."

Although not a sport widely played in Cork, there is a local hockey team, the Cork Wolfpack, who have invited the girls to join them for a game after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The girls have recently swapped their hockey sticks for hurls and have joined a couple of camogie training sessions with Bishopstown GAA before the latest Covid restrictions were put in place.
