A proposal that the Canadian government should regulate newspaper ownership more rigorously has been attacked by the group that represents the country's press owners. Anne Kothawala, president of the Canadian Newspaper Association, says: "There is no role for governments in regulating the news media." But a Senate inquiry led by Joan Fraser, concerned about the current lack of media diversity and alarmed by the possibility of greater ownership concentration in future, has called for regulation to prevent further consolidation.
