Canada’s latest travel advisory for India only for ‘health section & Monkeypox,’ says High Commission

NEW DELHI: Canada has clarified that its September 27 travel advisory update for India is was “only (about) the health section, and more specifically to Covid-19 and international travel and Monkeypox: advice for travellers.”

The advice to Canadian citizens to avoid going to places in India like “areas within 10 km of the border with Pakistan” in Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan and others “has not been recently updated and has been in place for a long period of time.”

The health section update on September 27 asks people to “exercise a high degree of caution.”

The Canadian High Commission said the advice for its citizens to “avoid all travel to areas within 10 km of the border with Pakistan” in Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan “due to the unpredictable security situation and presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance” and some others is part of the “risk levels’ and ‘safety and security’ sections of the advisory.

(This) information in these sections has not been recently updated and has been in place for a long period of time.

The Canadian advisory update had come less than a week after India had asked its citizens to “exercise due caution and remain vigilant” in Canada due to a “sharp increase” in hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities.

“In view of the increasing incidences of crimes as described above, Indian nationals and students from India in Canada and those proceeding to Canada for travel/education are advised to exercise due caution and remain vigilant,” the Indian travel advisory issued last Friday for Canada had said.
