Canada rugby players head onto streets to help Typhoon Hagibis recovery efforts after game called off

This is the wonderful moment Canada's players went out to help with the recovery efforts following Typhoon Hagibis.

With their Pool B match with Namibia in Kamaishi called off on safety grounds after the area was hit by floods and landslides, members of Kingsley Jones' squad spent their time helping with the clean up in the Japanese city.

In a video posted on the Rugby World Cup Twitter page, players can be seen shovelling mud as they do their bit.

With an evacuation order still in operation, World Rugby had made the decision to call off the match between Namibia and Canada - with both teams having been chasing their first win of the tournament. The result now goes down as a 0-0 draw.

The typhoon hit the Kamaishi area later than Tokyo and Yokohama because it is situated further north on the island of Honshu. You can follow the latest updates on the typhoon here .

The Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium was built to remember those who lost their lives in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and staged Uruguay’s memorable win over Fiji earlier in the tournament.

A statement from tournament organisers said: “Kamaishi is situated in a highly mountainous area, including mountains directly behind the main stand of the stadium. There have been landslides and flooding in the vicinity of the stadium and along access roads to the venue following torrential rain throughout the night.”

World Rugby Chief Operating Officer and Tournament Director Alan Gilpin said: “The safety of teams, fans, volunteers and workforce is our number one priority.

Following strong direction from the Prefecture of Iwate and the City of Kamaishi, we were left with no option but to cancel the match on safety grounds.

“We have been liaising closely with the city and the venue over the past 24 hours and have informed the teams. In line with the direction of the local authorities, we are making the difficult, but right decision to cancel the match.

“Our hearts go out to the teams and also their fans, but also the people of Kamaishi, who have been incredible during what has been a special journey in recent years. Nobody will be more disappointed than them, but also nobody would have better empathy with the decision.”
