In most cases, United States President Donald Trump is the only one laughing at his jokes. They are almost always distasteful and do not hold meaning. When he is not beating his own drum with these not-so-carefully-chosen words, he is targeting the Democrats or the country’s minorities. At other times, he is encouraging conspiracies by posting AI-generated videos on social media.
This time, America’s orange overlord is trying to joke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after he visited him this Tuesday to discuss trade and tariffs. In a joint session at the Oval Office, the two world leaders spoke to the press to discuss their interests and the potential outcomes of their deliberations.
While President Donald Trump was the one who mostly interacted with the press, Carney was also allowed time to speak to those present. In a particularly fascinating exchange between him and the press, Carney spoke of Trump’s hospitality while noting his “transformative” leadership, which, according to him, had led to several positive changes in the economy and elsewhere. He said:
“Thank you very much, Mr. President. If I may, you kindly hosted me and some of my colleagues a few months ago, and I said at the time, you are a transformative president. And since then, the transformation in the economy, unprecedented commitments of NATO partners to defense spending, peace from India, Pakistan, through to Azerbaijan, Armenia, disabling Iran as a force of terror. And now-and I’m running out of time, but this is, in many respects, the most important…”
As Mark Carney attempted to continue speaking, President Donald Trump interrupted him mid-sentence, jokingly referring to “the merger of Canada and the United States” and noting that this was the most important topic. Carney corrected him, saying he was not going to discuss that, to which Trump responded that he was “just kidding.” For those who may not know, since taking office for a second time this year, President Trump has repeatedly advocated for a merger between the U.S. and Canada, proposing that Canada become the 51st state. However, both Canadian leaders and citizens have shown little interest in this idea.
