Can you travel into Liverpool City Region during Tier 3 lockdown?

Liverpool City Region has been placed under tough new coronavirus measures this week.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced a new Covid alert level system on Monday, with regions placed under Medium, High or Very High risk categories.

Liverpool has one of the highest rates of coronavirus in the UK so was placed under Tier 3 measures, the harshest available, which came into effect on Wednesday.

Under the new rules many businesses have been forced to close and people's daily lives impacted.

Pubs, bars, casinos, betting shops, gyms and leisure centres and adult gaming centres have all been forced to close for at least four weeks.

Household mixing, which was already limited, has been tightened further, with people now only allowed to meet in parks or other public outdoor spaces.

Travel in and out of the city is something many people have been confused about, with people unsure if they can enter or leave the city.

But the government have clarified the rules around this.

The GOV.UK website said: "You should try to avoid travelling outside the very-high alert level area you are in or entering a very-high alert level area, other than for things like work, education or youth services, to meet caring responsibilities or if you are travelling through as part of a longer journey."

On whether overnight stays are permitted, the website said: "You should avoid staying overnight in another part of the UK if you are resident in a very-high alert level area, or avoid staying overnight in a very-high alert level area if you are resident elsewhere."

So you are advised not to leave or enter the area, but this has not been banned outright or made illegal.

Under the new Tier 3 alert level schools and universities have been allowed to remain open.

Restaurants and pubs serving substantial meals have also been allowed to remain open, with alcohol only allowed to be served with a meal.
