Can you still sit your driving test in Edinburgh during the coronavirus pandemic?

Scotland and the rest of the UK are currently under lockdown measures and can't take part in any activity which is not "deemed essential."

But are people still allowed to sit their driving test? Technically all driving lessons and tests have been suspended by the DVSA, however, some key workers are still allowed to sit an emergency driving test.

Certain keyworkers in the capital are also still taking driving lessons, here is what we know so far:

Can you book a driving test?

All driving tests have been suspended for up to three months but you can still apply for an emergency driving test if you are considered a keyworker.

According to the DVSA you are still eligible to sit your driving test if you work in:

  • health and social care
  • education and childcare
  • key public services
  • local and national government
  • food and other necessary goods
  • public safety and national security
  • transport
  • utilities, communication and financial services

How can I book an 'emergency driving test?'

Critical workers can apply for an emergency theory test by emailing critical.worker.theory.test@dvsa.gov.uk, while emergency driving tests can be arranged by emailing critical.worker.driving.test@dvsa.gov.uk.

You must send a photo or a scanned image of a valid ID such as your work ID badge. If you do not have an ID badge you can send:

  • An email from a work email address
  • Evidence from your employer, such as an email or scanned document including Company letterhead
  • A scan of your payslip

Can I still take driving lessons if I am a critical worker?

Workers who are are deemed critical and on the DVSA list can still book driving lessons during the pandemic.

Milligan driving is one of the many Edinburgh driving instructors still taking bookings.

On their website, they said: "While general driving lessons and driving tests are currently suspended, the DVSA is conducting limited emergency driving tests for Key Workers.

"The DVSA and my insurers also permit driving lessons for Key Workers. If you are a Key Worker (see this page for the definitions of Key Workers that the DVSA are using). Please text or WhatsApp me with more information and I'll see if I can help out."
