Can you still get a taxi during coronavirus lockdown? Precautions explained

With the UK under a coronavirus lockdown, all but essential travel should be avoided.

People have been urged to remain in their homes unless they're exercising, buying essential supplies, helping a vulnerable person or going to work (in cases where their job cannot be done from home).

Public transport is still running, but often on reduced timetables.

If you need to make an essential journey -  for example if you're delivering supplies to a vulnerable person, or a key worker who needs to travel to work - you may still be able to take a taxi.

Can you still get a taxi?

Taxi drivers have been classed as non-critical workers with exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Different taxi companies will have different policies, but many are still operating during the coronavirus lockdown.

You should not travel unless strictly necessary, and you should definitely not take a taxi if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms.

If it is vital that you travel, you should take precautions to protect yourself and your driver.

You should sit in the back of the car to maximise social distancing.

You should try not to have any physical contact with your driver - don't pay cash if possible, and if you have luggage, you should try to lift it in and out of the car yourself.

Some taxi companies may have antibacterial wipes so you can clean the seatbelt and door handles after touching them.

If in doubt, call the taxi company before you travel to clarify whether they have any rules.
