Can you still apply for a driving test during the coronavirus crisis? Info on licenses, learner permits and theory tests

Since coronavirus restrictions were first implemented across the country, most services have remained suspended for a number of weeks.

Unfortunately for those learning to drive, the Road Safety Authority has suspended the majority of its services since March.

However following the publication of the Government's road map to take Ireland out of lockdown in the coming months, it's likely there will be changes to the driving test suspension down the line.

Here's everything you need to know.

Can I still apply for a test?

While there are no tests currently taking place, you can still apply for a driving test.

The RSA will continue receive and process applications, however you will not be able to select a test slot and you will not be scheduled for a test until the driver testing service resumes.

You can apply online at www.rsa.ie.

What to do if your learner permit is about to expire and you need a test

To apply for a new learner permit you may need to provide proof that you have booked a driving test.

You can apply online for the driving test and you can use your acknowledgement notification or cancellation of driving test when renewing your permit.

Driving licenses and Learner Permits due to expire between 1 March 2020 and 30 June 2020 inclusive have had their date of expiry extended by four months due to the coronavirus restrictions.

Can I get a test if I am involved in the delivery of emergency or essential services and need one?

In exceptional circumstances, there will be a way to take urgent driving tests.

Given the restrictions that are currently in place for Covid-19 only customers who work with the emergency services (in the bus and truck categories only) eg. Ambulance Service, Fire Service, Civil Defence, medical professionals and critical supply chain HGV drivers can be prioritised for driving tests.

All other requests will be dealt with when testing resumes.

If this applies to you you can get in contact by emailing urgentdrivingtest@rsa.ie to explain your circumstances.

Can I still do my theory test?

The Driver Theory Test Service is suspended until further notice, but if you already have a test booked you will be contacted by the RSA and notified that your test will be rescheduled free of charge when the service resumes.

Driver theory test are also arranging ‘Emergency Testing Appointments’ for candidates with exceptional circumstances that provide support to essential services during COVID-19.

Can I renew my driver's license?

The NDLS service is suspended until further notice but you can renew your driving licence or learner permit here.

New regulations introduced by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport in April will extend the validity period of a learner permit/driving licence expiring from 1 March to 30 June 2020 by four months. e.g. if your learner permit or driving licence expired on 20 March 2020 it will be automatically extended until 20 July 2020.
