Can you really afford a dog? Here are the real costs

They're snuggly, loving, loyal, adorable and man's best friend.

But dogs are also pretty expensive to take care of.

Crufts being on TV may have made you think about how much you'd love a four-legged family member.

But it's worth remembering that as well as having an abundance of time and patience to dedicating to your furry friend, financially it can be a bit of drain.

While anyone with a dog will tell you that it's worth it, a quarter of those who have one have admitted they were unprepared for how much it would cost.

That's according to statistics from Admiral Pet Insurance.

Research by the insurance provider shows 43% of owners have admitted they didn't research the costs before buying their dog.

Looking into associated expenditures would have revealed using doggy day care services twice a week can add up to more than £2,000 a year.

A week in a dog kennel during holiday time can cost around £119.

And one in three dog owners admit they spend more than £25 a month on treats, adding up to £300 a year.

That's on top of vet fees, food and insurance.

Admiral has created this dog cost calculator to help you work out whether you can afford the dog of your dreams.

If you find a dog can be budgeted for, then consider a trip to your local shelter.

They might be an expenditure, but they're one of the best outgoings you'll ever have.
