Can you put hot water bottles in the freezer? Why you must be careful with cooling hack

The battle to try and sleep in temperatures of more than 20C is very rarely a fun one.

The summer heatwave has seen daytime temperatures go as high at 36C, while at night people have been trying all sorts of tricks to try and cool down enough to get some shut eye.

One hack is to fill up a hot water bottle before bed and put it in the freezer.

The woman who tried it shared it on the group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, saying: “If you're feeling the heat, fill a hot water bottle no more than 2/3 full of cold water and pop it in the freezer for a few hours.

"It stays cold for hours especially at night. Bliss!"

Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway admitted to trying the hack herself, telling viewers: "It does work, it does help definitely."

While some, including Kate Garraway, have been impressed with the idea, others have expressed caution.

GMB’s doctor, Sarah Jarvis, said people should not forget to “never put ice directly onto your skin because that can cause ice burns”. Placing it in a pillow case or wrapping it up would help avoid that problem, though water is likely to still seep through and leave a wet mark on the bed sheets.

Others have also advised using different hot water bottles for winter and summer, as the cold water and freezing could damage the seal.

This can potentially lead to boiling hot water spilling out when using it to keep warm and causing burns.

Other hacks to keep cool

GMB's Dr Sarah Jarvis issued a warning against putting a hot water bottle in the freezer (ITV)

Dr Sarah has said people can place cool flannels around their necks and even put bed sheets in the freezer, but they must not risk any ice burns.

She also warned against having a cold shower immediately before bed, saying: "We don't want to have a really cold shower.

"If you have a cool shower and then allow the water to evaporate off your skin... it will definitely help cool you down."
