Can you play Elden Ring Nightreign solo? Yes! Single-player functionality is a part of the game and has been since launch, though was initially incredibly challenging and difficult when held up against multiplayer. Those venturing into Elden Ring Nightreign on their own would usually suffer pretty brutally for it, as the balancing for solo play could be merciless as best.
However, with the 1.01.1 update released, solo play has been rebalanced to become a lot more viable, with the possibility of further patches and updates down the line to take some of the teeth out of the experience. If you want to know more, we'll explain everything you need to know about Nightreign's solo play below, as well as the possibility of duos later down the line.
Can you play Nightreign solo or offline?

Yes, you can play Elden Ring Nightreign solo and by yourself, either offline or online. This mode was very challenging in comparison to multiplayer, but an update as of June 2, 2025 has reduced the difficulty of solo play to make it proportionally closer to the multiplayer experience, and to punish players less for playing offline or on their own.
Having tried it myself, I can say that this has helped notably, though I'd still say that at time of writing Solo is still harder than multiplayer. The patch notes for update 1.01.1 lay out the two major changes:
- The effect "Automatic Revival Upon Defeat", which allows revival once per night boss battle, has been added to solo expeditions.
- The amount of runes gained has been increased for solo expeditions.
Even before the update, playing by yourself causes the health of many enemies, including the Elden Ring Nightreign bosses, to be lowered somewhat, so individually they are easier to kill. However, without allies to distract foes, heal and revive you (the last of which being especially important), it's still undeniable that the game is more manageable for three players, especially as many Elden Ring Nightreign classes have abilities that are designed to support and protect allies. This means that they lose potency when deployed on their own, and the classes themselves are no longer as good.
So while you can choose to play Elden Ring Nightreign solo, it's going to be rough. The one curiosity here is that there is no support for Elden Ring Nightreign duos; two players won't be able to jump into an instance, so you'll need to rope in a third to get a game going. It's an admittedly strange decision, but director Junya Ishizaki says that it's possible that support for duo's might be added post-launch.
