Like in any big and vibrant city, the shopping scene in Bristol is constantly evolving.
Store closures and new openings are a regular occurrence, and we have reported on several new business ventures even during lockdown.
The lure for most out-of-town visitors travelling into the city centre is Cabot Circus, which transformed the shopping experience when it opened in 2008, but there are some incredible independent shops here too and smaller boutiques away from the chains.
With so many comings and goings, however, even people who are Bristol born and bred might struggle to remember the city as it was decades ago.
We found some great black and white photos in our archive from years past, back when everybody did their shopping in person and Amazon referred only to the name of the rain forest rather than the world's biggest online retailer.
There are also a few pictures which seem more recent, but are still more than a decade old.
