Can you make pancakes with self-raising flour?

The day is finally here when even the most terrible chefs amongst us can get involved in the cooking madness.

Of course, we can only be talking about Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day as its most commonly known.

The day, which this year falls on Tuesday February 25, marks the start of Lent - a fast period leading up to Easter Sunday.

And whether you stick to the classic lemon and sugar combo, opt for something more extravagant or switch sweet for savoury - whipping up a few pancakes couldn't be easier.

All it takes is the three main ingredients of plain flour, milk and eggs and then the rest is up to you.

But what if you forget all about the important date in the calendar and only have self-raising flour in the kitchen cupboard?

It's Pancake Day (SHARED CONTENT UNIT)

Worry not, it's still possible to make the perfect pancake batter.

All it means is that you'll make a thicker batter - creating more of a fluffy, American-style pancake.

So there's no excuses when it comes to flipping on Tuesday.

Shrove Tuesday falls around a week earlier than last year.

The date itself signifies the start of lent and will always be exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday.

For the perfect pancake, try out this recipe:

  • Beat two eggs in a bowl
  • Pass 110g flour through a sieve into another bowl, adding a pinch of salt
  • Make a well in the flour and gradually pour in the beaten egg, whisking to combine with the flour a little at a time
  • Gradually pour in 275ml of milk while continuing to whisk, until you have a smooth batter with no lumps
  • Add a small amount of butter or oil to a non-stick frying pan and swirl until it's all coated
  • Pour in the batter and swirl to form a nice even coating in the pan
  • Lift the edge of the pancake to check it's golden brown, then flip
  • Cook until golden brown on both sides, then slide on to a plate and serve with your favourite topping
