Can you leave self isolation in Scotland if you test positive for covid after 10 days?

In recent weeks, self-isolation rules in Scotland have changed meaning people can now leave isolation earlier - but only if they meet a certain criteria.

Part of the rules will remain the same whereby an individual who tests positive on a lateral flow or PCR will need to self-isolate for 10 days.

But now, new rules are in place meaning you can isolate for seven days instead and leave before 10 days so long as you test negative on an LFT on day six and seven and have no fever.

But just because you haven a faint second red line, doesn't mean you can leave. If this happens you must isolate for a full 10 days.

In addition, triple vaccinated close contacts of those who test positive, both household and non-household, or those under the age of 18 and four months, do not need to isolate as long as they return a negative LFT result for seven days in a row and have no fever.

Any close contact who has not had three vaccines (and therefore do not count as fully vaccinated) will still have to self-isolate for the full 10 days and take a PCR test.

But what if you still test positive on lateral flow tests after the 10 days?

Here's the latest guidance according to NHS Scotland...

Can you leave self-isolation after day 7 or 10 even if you test positive for covid?

According to NHS Inform, after 10 days, you are less likely to infect people.

They state: "If you have symptoms, you should self-isolate immediately and book a PCR test. If you test positive, you should self-isolate for 10 days from the date your symptoms started.

"If you've had a positive PCR or LFT test result but no symptoms, you should self-isolate for 10 days from the date of your test. You may go on to develop symptoms over the next few days, but you don't need a confirmatory PCR test, unless advised by a clinician, and you don't need to re-start your isolation period."

"You may still have a cough or loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste for several weeks. People with symptoms are very unlikely to infect others after the 10th day of illness."

And they add: "Once you have completed your 10 day self-isolation, you can return to work and your usual activities as long as you feel better and do not have a high temperature. You must continue to follow the Scottish Government’s coronavirus advice."
