Can you help solve the mystery of the Gatehouse of Fleet fence shoes?

In days gone by gamekeepers, farm workers and mole catchers used to nail moles and crows to fence posts.

The dead crows were seen as a deterrent to others of their ilk.

The poor moles, for their part, were exhibited for accountancy reasons by “the moudie catcher”.

The gruesome evidence acted as proof for payment by the farmer.

But now less gory objects have appeared along a fence on the Gatehouse to Creetown road – a row of boots and shoes.

Gatehouse man Brian Power spotted the bizarre display a mile from the old Gatehouse station while heading down to Creetown.

He said: “I have no idea who put them there or why.

“It’s a mystery.”
