Can you be fired for being too drunk at your work Christmas party?

Christmas is just around the corner and work party time is just about to kick off across the country.

It's one of the only chances employees get to spend time with their colleagues outside of work and yes, things often get a little out of hand.

A bit of nonsense is basically par for the course at a Christmas party but when things go from being banter to just bad behaviour, is your job at stake?

While you'd be extremely unlucky to get fired for being drunk at the Christmas party because you couldn't get away with it in the office there is a point where you're at risk of professional action.

Capital Law partner Nia Cooper told Wales Online : "It is possible for an employer to take disciplinary action against employees who display bad behaviour during or even after a Christmas party.

"Such conduct is likely to fall within the “course of employment” and so can be treated as if the conduct were committed whilst at work.’

So, in short: Do - take advantage of the alcohol and be the social butterfly you were meant to be, not chained to your desk under the dictator-like rule of your superiors.

Do not - Start a fight, call someone mean things, be an idiot.
