Can the US and Russia forge a grand bargain in Syria?

Can the US and Russia forge a grand bargain in Syria?

Two weeks of indirect negotiations on Syria in the Swiss city of Geneva have not produced the breakthrough some had hoped they would.

Representatives of the opposition and the Syrian government have not even come close to talking about the big issues, including the fate of President Bashar al-Assad.

But neither have the talks been a complete disaster. More talks are scheduled for next month.

Many now believe it will now fall to the US and Russia to push things forward.

We evaluate the progress of the talks and ask whether Russia and the US are capable of putting an end to five years of war in Syria.

Presenter: Nick Clark

Igor Sutyagin - senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute

Samir Al Taqi - general director at the Orient Research Centre
