'Can't work it out' - Newcastle United fans left confused by team selection vs West Ham

Steve Bruce has named his first Newcastle United starting lineup of the 2020/21 season.

The Toon face West Ham United at the London Stadium in their first game of the campaign.

And four players could make their Newcastle debuts during the game, with the club adding Jeff Hendrick, Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, and Jamal Lewis to their squad so far during the summer transfer window.

Three of the four have been named in the starting lineup against the Hammers, with Lewis, Hendrick, and Wilson all on the team sheet, while Fraser has been included on the substitutes bench.

Wilson is partnered with Andy Carroll up front, although the formation is causing some confusion among Newcastle fans.

Some fans have also shown their dismay at the decision to leave Miguel Almiron on the bench.

Here are the fans’ initial thoughts on the starting lineup.

Matthew Advani: “Decent lineup. I’d prefer Miggy over Carroll though”

Callum Geere: “Miggy & Fraser to tear it up from the bench after we’re 3-0 up Brucey tactical genius... just watch!”

Buster Kapineesass: “So who is wide right if it's 442? Hendrick? Hayden? Fancy neither there.

Can't work it out.”

James Dodds: “Swap Carroll & Hendricks for Fraser & Miggy then that’s our best lineup. Obviously Dubravka aswell”

Andrew Simpson: “Quite like the look of that, excited! Miggy will tear them apart when he comes on as they get tired”

@robittw: “Not playing Almiron is mental”

Sean Mitchell: “What formation is this like? 4-3-1-2?”
