'Can't wait for Berardi vs Man United' Leeds United fans react to Australia squad announcement

Leeds United have named their 16-man squad which will face Manchester United as part of their pre-season tour of Australia.

The Whites head Down Under on Saturday ahead of their friendly doubleheader which will also see them take on Western Sydney Wanderers.

The squad contains a mixture of experience and youth, with several Thorp Arch graduates given the chance to impress Marcelo Bielsa on the tour.

However, some senior players have been left behind by the Argentine chief as they step up their fitness preparations for the 2019/20 season.

New signings Helder Costa, Jack Clarke and Ben White are amongst those remaining in West Yorkshire.

Despite missing out on seeing their new Portuguese acquisition, the club have delighted fans by naming Kalvin Phillips amongst the travelling party.

Leeds United's prized asset has been linked with a big-money move to Aston Villa this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur also credited with an interest in the 23-year-old.

Having lost Jack Clarke and Pontus Jansson already, the Whites have put all their resources into keeping their academy graduate, offering him a new contract which would make him one of the club’s top earners.

United supporters were thrilled to see Villa agree a deal for Manchester City holding midfielder Douglas Luiz, who plays in the same role as Phillips.

Whilst that doesn’t necessarily signal the end of their pursuit, it does make a move for Leeds’ star man unlikely.

Now, with Phillips named in the squad, fans are feeling optimistic of holding onto the 23-year-old.

Here’s how Leeds fans reacted to the news on social media…
