Can straight-talking Ice Cube end sexism in hip-hop?

Huzzah for NWA legend Ice Cube, who clears up one of the great sexist misconceptions in hip-hop. To wit: unless you are a bitch or a ho, lyrics about bitches and hos do not relate to you and therefore cannot be ruled to be in some way objectionable.

Interviewed by Rolling Stone in advance of the release of Straight Outta Compton, the biographical film of NWA, Ice Cube set things out for the benefit of the remedial class.

“If you’re a bitch,” he explains, “you’re probably not going to like us. If you’re a ho, you probably don’t like us. If you’re not a bitch or a ho, don’t be jumping to the defence of these despicable females. Just like I shouldn’t be jumping to the defence of no punks or cowards or no slimy sons of bitches that’s men. I never understood why an upstanding lady would even think we’re talking about her.”

Mm. I get the feeling we’re never going to be able to put our finger on the reason. Either way, let that be an end to it.
